Club History
The Reef Street Rod Club was officially formed in 1972.
Founder members were Harry and Dave Corbett, Peter Jackson and Chris Saunders.
We were later joined by Peter Bester, Gus Saunders, Henry Marks and Spolly and
many more.
The first official outing was attended by Harry (34 Ford), Dave (Renault
Gordini), Spolly (Austin Healy), Henry (The Animal) and Bill and Norman Hood
with their 1934 Chevy Coupe.

The name "Reef Street Rod" was derived from the fact that we drew enthusiasts
from all towns on the Reef (as we once knew Gauteng) from Springs in the East
to Randfontein in the West.
The club's Tall T emblem was designed by Harry and is proudly displayed on club
vehicles. Unfortunately the ex club members never return badges so there are
vehicles in existence that do not belong to the club and are no longer active.
We have an active membership of approximately 45 families which increases to
around 60 prior to and after a Nationals.
The first Street Rod nationals was held in Bloemfontein, organized by Stuart
Cox and well attended by our club. This took place in 1985, followed by
Alberton 1987
Kimberley 1989
Port Elizabeth 1991
Durban 1993
East London 1995
Bloemfontein 1997
Alberton 1999
Cape Town 2001
Port Elizabeth 2003
Klerksdorp 2005
East London 2007
We are active in supporting charities such as schools and churches and do not
support shows where individuals reap the benefit of our hobby.
We have lost many members through the years by natural attrition as well as
death by accident, murder and natural causes. Some of which were Anne Coverley,
Daddy Lotter, Johnny Pieters, Jimmy and Joe de Sadelear, Ivor Pringle, Jan
Maree, Piet Strydom, Frans Nagel and many more.
Our club meetings were initially held at members' homes, later at the Primrose
Hotel. We then moved to the Simmer and Jack Mine Clubhouse and then to No.9 Du
Preez Street in Newlands. Here we resided until 1992 when Oupa Daddy passed
away where after we moved to Alberton and after a couple of meetings at Dave's
home we moved into our current clubhouse at Alberton Hoer Skool in Florentia,
Alberton North.
